A few years ago, just after HmT Mechatronics opened its doors, we were involved in an engine monitoring project. Ivory & Johnson is a very well-known company in the marine environment and has had to upgrade their old engine monitoring systems. This would ensure that they could prolong the lifespan of these very expensive assets (fishing trawlers).
It is always important to monitor and control these large engines and shut them down in the event of any failure. As a subcontractor, HmT Mechatronics was responsible for the design and development of the SCADA and PLC control system.
Our Solution to the Problem:
All parameters that had to be monitored, such as exhaust temperatures, factory temperatures as well as oil pressure and oil temperatures for both the engine and the gearbox must had to be visible from one viewpoint. The pitch and fuelrack positions are also indicated on the overview screen.
The other very important user requirement for the system was to record all measured temperature and pressure sensors into a database, at an interval of 5 minutes. It enables the supervisor to plug a USB memory stick into any of the Windows Computer ports via USB, extract and back-up any historical data. This data can then later be view and analyse in any report building software. With all the necessary safety aspects implemented, it now gives the client the peace of mind to know that his fishing trawlers’ engines are well looked after.
