A well-known cellar from the Riebeek Valley approached us to see if we can provide them with a solution to the problems they experienced regarding inaccurate control of red wine valves (knife gates). The client lost a lot of time on production as well as physical wine with transferring wine to and from the 32x wine tanks, 5x press units, 5x unload bays and 2x mass coolers. This was all due to valves that did not open and close at the expected times. The main problem at hand was to upgrade the old PLC system, but keep the existing pneumatic controls. With this upgrade it was expected to incorporate the old manual unloading bays so that the operator can select which load to direct to which tank.
Our Solution to the Problem:
Along with our suggestion to upgrade the old control system to the latest HMI & PLC technology, we brought a lot of new features to the table that helped the client greatly with production time and also quality improvements. The operator can now control the entire cellar and view from a single 19 inch touch screen. From this control panel the operator can select which load from what unload bay must go to which tank or press unit via what mass cooler. Apart from the directing and transferring wine between different section of the cellar, our interlocking procedures play a vital role in quality control. The interlock procedures prevents the operator from starting a transfer to any unit that is in use or not fully operational.
This client now has the peace of mind that he gets the necessary local support from a company that is only 100 km away. In the event of quick fault finding remote support is also available.
